Club Profile

Portishead Town Football Club are currently a point off the foot of the Western League Division One but that is only the story seen from the outside looking in with continued existence in the league being the main priority at the end of what will be a turbulent campaign for a host of member clubs at either end of both divisions writes Kerry Miller.

The club run four adult sides and two ladies teams, both of which are top of their respective tables as this is written as well as catering for a mind-boggling 700 young players from U6 to U16, which must make the Christmas, or end of season shindigs something of a logistical nightmare.

The town of Portishead has always been known as Posset, which many think comes from saying the name quickly with two syllables, but Posset was the original name of the town in the Domesday Book as well as being a drink made of hot milk curdled with ale, wine, or other alcohol and typically flavoured with spices.

That concoction would have been useful when the side took on Southern League Paulton Rovers in the Premier Cup recently in soaking conditions at Bristol Road and where they exorcised the demons of the 8-0 hammering at Westbury United by taking Rovers to the second half of extra-time before bravely running out of steam.

First team boss Mark Williams is a local man who had a spell at Clevedon Town and was in charge of the County U18 squad for a few years and he looks after what is primarily a young side with good players who need some serious game time to redress the problem of a lack of experience. It is no secret that simply fielding a competitive side is often tricky in its self at the club but the backbone behind the scenes provides the ammunition for the management to do their thing and all are confident that their fortune will change for the better.

Guiding the ship through choppy footballing waters is chairman Adrian Green who is in his second spell at the top having resigned once but been tempted back while a familiar face is former Bristol City football secretary Jean Harrison who has been at the club for around four years. Never far away from a job that needs doing is John Harris, who is currently listed as joint welfare officer but in his 30 years at the club has been chairman, bar manager, secretary and Western League committee man having started junior football there with his sons. On the playing side, Williams has lanky striker Rob Latham, son of local sports wroter Richard Latham, who is in his early 20s and has returned form a footballing scholarship in America. James Hughes is at the opposite end of the career scale but is still turning out for Posset, having started with English Schools caps many years earlier.

The ladies sides are riding high in the SW Women's and Somerset Women's Leagues with Northern Ireland international Shannon Holloway on the books alongside SKY TV presenter Michelle Ventnor, who came across the bridge from Cardiff Women.

The whole set up has enjoyed sponsorship from the likes of Clifton Estate Agents and the local Future Services Group for many years and are looking to consolidate and move on up the league as autumn makes way for winter in Posset.
